In this course we will interpret the "photographic message" (the phrase comes from the title of an important essay by the critic Roland Barthes) of the images on the front page the Sunday New York Times issued for each week of the semester. Our purpose is to notice how pictures on a page function rhetorically in relation to other proximate texts, here to inform us of the "news."
