This course will explore the connection of the sociological concept of cultural trauma to the history of race in colonial America and the early American republic. We will see how trauma and race played a role in shaping our cultural identity, our public discourse and the American national myth. All along the way, I will make connections between this early identity and our contemporary society and popular culture.
