This seminar will track theories of imagination and creativity in the modern period, with special attention to how diverse disciplines — such as cognitive psychology, the neurosciences, philosophy, and artificial intelligence — have transformed conceptualizations of novelty and inspiration in aesthetic and epistemological domains. After some historical orientation, the class will focus on key texts from the 20th and 21st centuries.
