    Rhetoric of the Visual

    This course will focus on language that is used to talk about the visual and occasionally on the visual that comments on language. It will introduce language used to both talk about the visual as well as the language required for analysis of visual material will be covered. Images covered will include formal art objects as well as everyday images, such as seen in mass media. Texts for this course will include those by the likes of Roland Barthes, Guy Debord, Susan Sontag, W.J.T. Mitchell, and Jacques Rancière. By the end of the class, students will be able to talk about the effects of language on the visual and vice versa.
